- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoons tamarind paste
- Salt to taste

Method
- Wash the basmati rice in cold water and soak it for 15 minutes.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the diced onion and cumin seeds and sauté until the onion is translucent.
- Add coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala to the pot and stir for a minute.
- Add the soaked rice to the pot and stir until the rice is coated with the spice mixture.
- Add 2 cups of water, tamarind paste, and salt to taste. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid.
- Cook for 18-20 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.
- Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing the rice with a fork.
