Description

Hong Kong steamed rice rolls are a popular Cantonese dim sum dish that is loved by many. These delicate and silky rice rolls are filled with a variety of savory fillings and are usually served with soy sauce or hoisin sauce. The texture is soft, almost like a noodle, and has a slightly chewy texture that is satisfying to bite into.

Prep Time

Preparation for this dish takes about 20 minutes.

Cook Time

Cooking time takes about 10 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1/4 cup tapioca starch
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • Filling of your choice (e.g. shrimp, beef, char siu)
  • Chopped scallions
  • Soy sauce or hoisin sauce for serving

Equipment

  • Steamer basket
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Non-stick pan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together rice flour, tapioca starch, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients, whisking constantly to ensure there are no lumps.
  3. Continue to whisk until the mixture is smooth and has a consistency similar to pancake batter.
  4. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and lightly grease with vegetable oil.
  5. Pour 1/4 cup of the batter into the pan, tilting it to ensure it covers the entire pan in a thin layer.
  6. Cook for about 1-2 minutes or until the edges start to lift and the surface of the rice roll is no longer wet.
  7. Using a spatula, carefully remove the rice roll from the pan and place it on a plate.
  8. Repeat until all the batter is used up.
  9. Place your desired filling onto the rice roll and roll it up tightly.
  10. Repeat with the remaining rice rolls.
  11. Steam the rice rolls in a steamer basket for 3-5 minutes or until heated through.
  12. Garnish with chopped scallions and serve with soy sauce or hoisin sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure to whisk the batter well to prevent lumps from forming.
  • You can use any type of filling you prefer, but some popular options include shrimp, beef, and char siu.
  • If the rice rolls are too thick, add more water to the batter. If they are too thin, add more rice flour.
  • Store any leftover rice rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
