Ingredients

  • 1 cup of basmati rice

  • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of asafetida
  • 1 tablespoon of chana dal
  • 1 tablespoon of urad dal
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • Curry leaves (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Juice of 1 lemon

Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Drain the rice and add it to a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for 18-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked.
  3. While the rice is cooking, heat the oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and asafetida. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until the mustard seeds start to pop.
  5. Add the peanuts, chana dal, urad dal, dried red chilies, and curry leaves (if using). Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the peanuts are lightly browned.
  6. Add salt to taste and turn off the heat.
  7. When the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large mixing bowl and fluff it with a fork.
  8. Add the lemon juice and the peanut mixture to the rice and mix well.
  9. Adjust salt to taste and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute basmati rice with any other type of rice, but keep in mind that the cooking time may vary.
